Music Marketing Doesn't Have to Suck // April 2024

4 week online workshop led by Zack Fischmann (Marmalade Mountain) starting April 14th!

Sign up with a friend for a 20% discount. Contact info@magicnothing.com with the emails of both participants and we'll send a discount code :)

In this workshop, you will learn

1. How to clarify your why and identify your bread and butter.

2: How to change between your artist t-shirt and your marketing / business suit (suits also don't have to suck).

3. How to make effective content in a fun and authentic way.

4. How to set up a meta conversion campaign to promote your work. Due to popular demand, we will focus on Instagram -> Spotify conversions, but there are many other applications for conversion campaigns and you can use yours for whatever purpose is most relevant to you!

5. How to interpret the results from your campaign and optimize.

6. What are some alternative marketing tools and practices.

We're going to work together to define, implement, and optimize a personalized marketing campaign along with a cohort and some built-in accountability!

Do conversion campaigns actually work?

We have to preface this by saying that the focus of this workshop is on learning a new skill rather than achieving a specific outcome! That said, well-run conversion campaigns are extremely effective at building active listenershipThis is because people engage directly with your videos and take active steps to listen to your music. As a result, listeners are much more likely to save your songs, add them to playlists, and become fans. We love fans!

This active listening can trigger algorithmic playlists that will push your music even further, and if people continue to engage on algorithmic playlists... this is how songs blow up!

As an example, Marmalade Mountain save rates during album-based conversion campaigns are historically 50-150%, while background save rates are ~1-10%.

Prerequisites

1. Must have a release publicly available to market, or at least scheduled to be out by 4/21!

2. Must have a budget to market with; minimum $100, this all goes towards marketing your own work! If it goes well, optimize it and keep it running!

3. Basic video editing skills! You must be able to create video content, even if it's just using iMovie, IG, or TikTok. I often use Adobe Premiere and Videoshop. Anything works!

From Zack:

This is a super exciting time to be an independent musician!

There are so many tools and resources available, and you can now write, record, mix and master your own work with a laptop and a pair of headphones. But after you've put in all the work to get your music ready to share, releasing it without a team can feel like dropping a grain of sand on the beach. There are more than 60,000 songs going live on Spotify alone every single day, and posting daily on social media trying to battle for attention can feel so draining.

So what’s the point of doing all of this? How do you define your goals, find your audience, grow your fanbase and streaming numbers, get people listening to your music and build a sustainable practice for yourself?

First, we need to have a real conversation with ourselves about why we want to market our music, and if we’re serious about building an audience, we need to figure out who they are and how we're going to reach them!

FAQ

Q: Can I market music that came out a while ago?

A: YES! I'm currently marketing an album from 2021, and I've seen multiple successful campaigns for songs from the early 2000's!

Q: I can't make the lecture / q&a or breakout times, can I still attend the workshop?

A: YES! All content will be recorded and shared to watch and learn at your own pace, though I do recommend being present whenever possible for the best experience.

Q: I just released or want to release my first song! Am I ready for this workshop?

A: Perfect timing! This workshop provides an excellent foundation for your first release. As long as you schedule your release to be out by the 3rd lecture, you're golden.

Q: Will my song be successful?

A: I have no idea! The goal of this workshop is to help you develop a skillset to manage your own marketing, but the quality of your work and the zeitgeist will ultimately decide.

Q: Will we talk about the ALGORITHM?

A: Hell yes. Probably more than we should. But also it's important to remember that the larger strategy is the point of this workshop. Getting 10k, 100k, 1m streams is cool and we can absolutely help you devise strategies to grow your listenership, but these numbers rarely change anything on their own!

Q: What technical skills do I need for this workshop?

A: You'll need to have at least one song released on the internet, you'll need to be able to navigate the meta ads manager (i.e. a spreadsheet that's honestly kinda confusing at first, but we'll work through it together), and you'll need to be able to make video content with basic video editing software (premiere, davinci, imovie, and other video editing apps that allow you to add sound and music are all sufficient).

Q: Can I get a refund?

A: If you're truly not happy with the workshop, contact us at info@magicnothing.com for a full enrollment refund. Please share why and how we could improve in your email.
